Rhyl Congress and the end of the season

With the chess season coming to a close, the final games of the gwynedd championships were played. In a twist of fate, I went against fellow club member, Adrian Cucu in the final round. Both of us had not done too well in the championship so far (Me: +1-2=1, Adrian: +1-3=0), so were both looking for a win in the final round to place well overall.

Chess club elections

The Chess club had their elections for the different commitee positions. Before the election, after 2 years of great service, Chris Hussien decided to step down as treasurer due to difficulties next year as being only a part-time student doing his P.H.D. Furthermore, Tim Cox also stepped down as social secretary since it was his final year at Bangor.

The new committee is as followed:

President: Joseph Clarke
Secretary: Star Morgan-Seales
Treasurer: Andrew Smith
Social Secretary: Kirstie Irvine
Chess Expert: Adrian Cucu

Well done to everyone that got onto the committee

Well done to Adrian Cucu!

Well done to Adrian Cucu who managed to get 3rd place at the Hereford Congress. His results were 4/6 points which is very commendable considering he played some tough opposition in the U120 category. At the end of the tournament, his performance grade sky-rocketed to 118! This meant he won an extra £50 as a grading prize (best performing player under 100). Overall it was a superb result from Adrian and hopefully he can replicate that in future tournaments.

Varsity Qualifer

Results from Varsity Qualifier

Last Thursday at the club was the qualifier to decide which team we would bring to the Varsity Match against Aberyswyth University. Board 1 is likely to already go to Jimi Squirrel so we needed 3 more players for the team. Since we only had one club night to do it, it was a rapid play, 10 minutes each, 4 round swiss system. Here are the results:
